Our First Sikhs in Schools Online Event

2 min read

In April 2026, Sikhs in Schools held our first online event, bringing together people of Sikh backgrounds and allies working across education from around the country.

More than 70 people joined us online, making it our first opportunity to introduce Sikhs in Schools, share why the network has been created and begin a wider conversation about the experiences of people of Sikh backgrounds and allies working across the education sector.

The response was incredibly encouraging.

From the outset, there was a real sense of energy. Attendees joined from different parts of the country and represented a range of roles and experiences across education. The level of engagement throughout the session showed just how much appetite there is for a space where professionals can connect, share experiences and support one another.

Why Sikhs in Schools?

Sikhs in Schools has been created to build a stronger community for people Sikh backgrounds and allies working in education.

That includes people working in teaching and leadership, but also those working across areas such as data, finance, operations, pastoral support, administration and other professional roles, as well as colleagues working in colleges and the wider education sector.

Our first webinar gave us the opportunity to explain the thinking behind the network and the need for a space that brings those different experiences together.

It was also an opportunity to begin listening.

Throughout the event, attendees contributed ideas, shared reflections and asked questions about what Sikhs in Schools could become. The volume of engagement both during the session and afterwards reinforced something we had already felt strongly. That is that there is real enthusiasm for greater connection and representation in education.

Building a community

One of the most exciting aspects of the evening was seeing people connect with the idea of Sikhs in Schools itself.

For some, it was an opportunity to discover other professionals working in education beyond their own organisation or local area. For others, it opened conversations around representation, career development, belonging, leadership and the experiences colleagues can have within education workplaces.

There was also a clear excitement about what could come next.

Sikhs in Schools is not simply about bringing people together for individual events. We want to create opportunities for people to build relationships, learn from one another, share experiences and contribute to conversations about how we create a stronger and more inclusive education workforce.

Just the beginning

Our April webinar was the first step.

Since then, we have now launched our first in-person event, taking place on 21 November 2026 in Milton Keynes! You can access tickets here!

To everyone who joined our first online event, contributed to the discussion and shared their enthusiasm with us: thank you. More than 70 people coming together for our very first event gave us an exciting glimpse of the community that can be built.

We are only getting started! See you all in-person in November!
